The end of October 2024 is the 40th ANNIVERSARY of THE JAMES BOND BEDSIDE COMPANION!
The official publication date was November 26, 1984, but back then publishers paid little attention to pub dates... the book was in the stores at the end of October. The publication party was at the end of October, and Raymond's first book signing (at the Mysterious Bookshop in New York) was then as well. The BEDSIDE COMPANION at this time was a U.S.-only publication by Dodd, Mead & Co., in simultaneous hardcover and softcover editions. Also pictured is the publisher's press kit, and photos from the Mysterious Bookshop signing--with John Gardner, who was also signing that day!
Raymond says, "Stuart Howard was my invaluable beta reader who did the first edit of the book. The legendary Cynthia Vartan was my editor at Dodd Mead. Holly Powell graciously organized my publication party at the loft of Don Hampton of Empire Stage Players in NYC. It was Ian Fleming's literary agent, the late Peter Janson-Smith, who opened doors and paved the way for the three-year process of producing this book from start to finish, and the late Clare Blanshard, one of Fleming's close friends, who helped me tremendously."

Raymond Benson
Raymond Benson is the author of over 40 published books, including his latest novel, THE MAD, MAD MURDERS OF MARIGOLD WAY (October 2022). Other recent works include HOTEL DESTINY–A GHOST NOIR (September 2020), BLUES IN THE DARK (October 2019), IN THE HUSH OF THE NIGHT (May 2018), and THE SECRETS ON CHICORY LANE (October 2017). Among his several original suspense novels, he is the author of the acclaimed “Black Stiletto” saga that began with THE BLACK STILETTO in 2011 and continued with THE BLACK STILETTO: BLACK & WHITE (2012), THE BLACK STILETTO: STARS & STRIPES (2013), THE BLACK STILETTO: SECRETS & LIES (2014), and THE BLACK STILETTO: ENDINGS & BEGINNINGS (also 2014).
Raymond is mostly known for being the third–and first American–writer to be commissioned by the James Bond literary copyright holders between 1996-2002 to take over writing the 007 novels. In total he penned and published worldwide six original 007 novels, three film novelizations, and three short stories. An anthology of his 007 work, THE UNION TRILOGY, was published in the fall of 2008, and a second anthology, CHOICE OF WEAPONS, appeared summer 2010. His book THE JAMES BOND BEDSIDE COMPANION, an encyclopedic work on the 007 phenomenon, was first published in 1984 and was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award by Mystery Writers of America for Best Biographical/Critical Work.
